Delivering live broadcast video over unmanaged public networks requires a thorough understanding of network protocols and encoding standards. When building an IP contribution workflow, engineers must balance signal precision with available bandwidth to ensure stability and broad interoperability. In our latest webinar, Securing Broadcast Uptime Over Unpredictable Public Internet, Roland and Peder details the essentials of high-end streaming encoding for broadcast.
Relying on a single network link introduces a critical point of failure in any broadcast architecture. Overcoming unpredictable connections demands true path redundancy. Utilizing open standards like redundant SRT combined with SMPTE 2022-7 enables seamless protection switching and allows identical data packets to travel over diverse ISP routes. If one connection fails, the receiver reconstructs the video instantly without dropped frames.

Redundant SRT based on open standards is a workflow developed in collaboration with Eurovision Services – read more about the project.
The session also covers bandwidth efficiency, providing clear performance comparisons between AVC and HEVC encoding. While HEVC significantly reduces the required bitrate, the presentation explains how implementing adaptive bitrate, network bonding, and forward error correction keeps IP streams intact during network congestion and packet loss.
Further, the webinar covers signal precision and how it impacts the bandwidth budget. The network requirements for 8-bit versus 10-bit color depth are detailed, alongside 4:2:0 versus 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. Understanding these requirements gives the workflow maximum flexibility, allowing engineers to allocate bandwidth properly based on specific production needs.

Key topics covered in the 60 minute Tech Webinar:
- Network Robustness: Technical overview of redundant SRT and SMPTE 2022-7 for seamless protection switching.
- Bandwidth Efficiency: Performance analysis and bitrate comparisons between AVC and HEVC.
- Signal Precision: Bandwidth requirements for 8 bit versus 10 bit and 4:2:0 versus 4:2:2 workflows.
