redundant SRT using the open standards RTP and SMPTE 2022-7

SRT is an open transport protocol which grows in popularity every year. It makes it easy for content providers to share live events with broadcasters over public internet between countries and continents securely. Since the Internet doesn’t provide any quality of service, there is always a risk for interruptions.

Sending two streams via different internet providers and paths is a way to add redundancy, but with this comes the need for automatic and seamless switching between the paths.

Direkt links and Direkt routers can now send two or more identical RTP streams over SRT on the same or different network interfaces.

Direkt routers and Direkt receivers can receive redundant streams on one or multiple network interfaces. An error-free output can be provided as long as all packets arrive on at least one stream within the specified skew buffer time. This is implemented using the open standard SMPTE 2022-7 to be compatible with content providers using different SRT encoders and routers.

Intinor offers versatile support for MPEG-TS using other protocols such as raw UDP and RTP, an Intinor Direkt router can be used to add redundant SRT support to almost any encoder or decoder.

SMPTE 2022-7 can also be used for seamless protection switching between RTP and RTP+SRT. This can for example be useful to create redundancy between a satellite feed and a SRT feed from the internet.

For those receiving live content with redundant streams provided by partners, a Direkt router can be used to receive up to 24x concurrent redundant live streams and output on SDI.

On the other hand, if you’re the content provider, an Intinor Direkt link or Direkt router can encode and send redundant SRT streams from up to 16x SDI inputs. You can provide the streams to a large number of partners. One Intinor device can provide more than 100x concurrent SRT streams.

RTP over SRT and SMPTE 2022-7 is available in our latest “testing firmware” as an experimental feature while we finish the last touches.
